Smart Lighting in the Internet-of-Things era – Past, present and future

Affordable, easy to use and robust smart lighting networks like the NXP/TCP/Greenwave’s Connected Lighting system and the Philips Hue have become a reality and are available in retail since 2012. This is due to the availability of low cost, low power wireless microcontrollers, LED lamps with long lifetime, ubiquitous presence of smartphone and tablet for intuitive control and standardized networking protocols.
Today consumer experience is further enhanced with brighter tunable white and wide color gamut RGB(W) lamps, coverage of more lamp form factors and innovative apps integrating lighting in e.g. gaming and other consumer applications. Also cost is lowered continuously. Examples of this will be presented. Adoption in both professional as residential application will be accelerated by standardization of wireless network communication protocols example by industry consortia like The Connected Lighting Alliance and improvement of both ease-of-use and security with NFC authentication and commissioning.
MSO’s and utilities drive the deployment of full home automation networks and services that include smart lighting. As these are internet connected this gives rise to cyber security issues. By adopting best practices from banking and e-government applications like the use of secure elements these concerns can be addressed.
